Repotting is a crucial step to ensure the health of your potted trees. Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:
- A basin filled with water
- Pruning shears or a small rubber mallet
- A trowel or garden knife
- Sturdy gardening gloves
It's easiest to repot near the planting hole to facilitate immediate planting of the tree.
💧 2. Hydrate the Root Ball
For trees in plastic containers, completely submerge the pot in the basin of water. Hold the trunk until no more air bubbles appear on the surface. This can take 2 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the container. If the pot is too large to submerge, slowly pour water into the pot until saturated. This step is particularly important for heather plants, as their substrate dries quickly and retains little moisture.

Once the root ball is well hydrated, proceed as follows:
- Grasp the tree by the root collar (at the base of the trunk) and lift the container.
- If the tree resists, lightly tap the pot with pruning shears or your hand to loosen the roots.
- If necessary, cut the plastic pot with pruning shears, starting from the base, to free the root ball.
- For terracotta pots, moisten the root ball, and if the roots have grown out of the drainage hole, trim them cleanly with sharp, clean pruning shears.

Once the tree is out of its pot, it's important to replant it immediately:
- Place the tree in a pot slightly larger than the previous one or in the prepared planting hole.

- Water thoroughly after planting to ensure good establishment.
