Introduction

Wool is an exceptional natural fiber, used for millennia for its thermal qualities, suppleness, and durability. But beyond its physical properties, it is its unique chemical composition that gives it its remarkable characteristics. 1. Keratin: The main protein in wool

Wool is primarily composed of keratin, a fibrous protein that accounts for approximately 95% of its composition. Keratin is also present in hair, nails, and bird feathers. Its complex structure gives wool its unique properties.

1.1. Chemical structure of keratin

Keratin is a protein composed of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. It mainly contains:

  • Cysteine : A sulfur-containing amino acid that promotes the formation of disulfide bonds, thus giving the fiber strength and elasticity.
  • Glycine and Alanine : Light amino acids that ensure the suppleness of wool.
  • Glutamic Acid and Arginine : Responsible for wool's ability to absorb moisture and interact with other molecules.

Thanks to its high cysteine content, wool keratin is highly resistant to external aggressions while remaining flexible.

2. The structure of the wool fiber

Each wool fiber is made up of several layers that interact with each other to offer interesting mechanical and chemical properties:

  • The cuticle : An outer layer composed of keratin scales that protect the fiber against wear and moisture.
  • The cortex : The main part of the fiber, composed of keratin-rich cells responsible for elasticity and strength.
  • The medulla : A central area that plays a minor role in the overall structure of wool.

These layers give wool insulating, absorbent, and water-resistant properties while making it biodegradable.
